Beachtek make a range of audio adapters that allow you to use XLR mics with video cameras that do not have XLR inputs. As a videojournalist do you need one?

Why XLR?

3-pin XLR is the industry standard for audio connections. It is a balanced connector which helps provide a noise free signal. If you are running long lengths of audio cable around othe cables and wiring it is essential to use balanced cable with XLR connectors.

Almost all professional microphones use XLR connectors.

The XLR connector is a lot more robust than the fragile 1/8th inch connectors used on many consumer/prosumer camcorders.

Why Beachtek?

Beachtek adapters for most cameras are $180. Units with phantom power and meters are $350.

You don’t need a beachtek to use an XLR mic with a camera with 1/8″ inputs - you can buy simple XLR to 1/8″ adapters for $50 or less. But the Beachteks have several advantages:

  • all have 2 or more inputs
  • accept line level as well as mic level signals so you can record from sound boards, CD players etc.
  • the signal from a mono mic can be sent to both audio channels
  • level meters for cameras that don’t have them built in
  • phantom power - required by some mics
  • Harry from beachtek is one of the most knowledgeable audio guys you will ever run across.

The bottom line

If you are just using a single wireless unit or a mic that never strays too far from the camera you will be fine with an unbalanced connection. Otherwise get a beachtek.

This video from Guy at DVestore shows how the unit interfaces with the camera.
