If I had a nail-gun….

Published by peter at 12:36 pm under blogging, communication, videojournalists

Late last night I wrote a long and rather turgid post with the heading “If I had a hammer…..” The reference is to Abraham Maslow’s - “I suppose it is tempting, if the only tool you have is a hammer, to treat everything as if it were a nail.

The post was a critique of an article by George Lucas, via Michael Rosenblum. Lucas argues that desktop video is set to

“shape the technological, economic, cultural and educational landscape for this century and the millennium to come.”

As I said the blog post was kind of labored and needed some tightening up. So rather than posting it right away I left it overnight. First thing this morning I edit it down and post it.Shortly after that I visit Rosenblum’s website and there right on his front page is a prominent link to a post by Andy Dickinson entitled “If I had a hammer….”.

Two problems - first, his blog post was a lot better than mine, but secondly and more importantly the time stamp on his post was earlier than the time stamp on mine.

So I trashed the post.

Email any a-list blogger - chances are you will get a reply within five minutes. Partly that’s because they live chained to their laptops. But it’s also because the whole blogging world is not just about being right it’s about being first. Post first think later.

POSTSCRIPT

Although Andy Dickinson’s post was inspired by one of MR’s it had nothing whatsoever to do with George Lucas. Coincidence I guess - because when Rosenblum brings hammers to mind it is not the little fellers that contractors used to use before they had nail-guns. It’s those big-ass sledge hammers they use to knock down walls.

I didnt know that’s where the quote was from.

I think it’s kind of funny that someone like Rosenblum starts quoting Lucas as part of his cause you know there is something a little off around there.

You should still post your critique.

I agree with post first and think later idea- hell youve read my posts :) - but you should always post. Add your views to the mix.
