The first rule of composition, according to Brahms, is to master the art of counterpoint. Strictly speaking Brahm’s rules apply to musical composition, but this one transplants happily to the video realm. Combining two or more themes/perspectives in a single story can create a more compelling message.

This clip counterpoints two separate takes on a family stuck in the wake of Katrina. Shot at the same time, by the same person - one with a still camera, the other with video. The video provides context, the photos add a patina of significance. They work well together, like two melodies reinforcing and amplifying each other: the video delivers the narrative, the photos universalize the message.
