Authenticity - street VJ - New Haven Independent
This is one awful example of video camera technique, and one fine specimen of street VJ. It tells a whole story in under a minute, no editing. Just a guy in the street pulling his camera out when he sees a someone dumpster diving.
The guy with the camera in this case happens to be Paul Bass, publisher of the New Haven Independent, the most promising example of a local news site I have come across.
Thankyou very much for the kind comment!
Yep, he got it on camera ( elements of tagging there) and I guess just as some of us did, Paul might change a few things or not in the future.
One of the most interesting aspects of video/ radio journalism today is we’re learning in full glare of everyone else, which attracts often more cons than pros.
I had 6 months on a BBC regional station before they let me go anywhere near a uher for broadcast

yes - it is difficult to imagine a multimedia department saying “hire this guy” on the strength of that piece. More impressive to me was the rapport he was so effortlessly able to establish with the subject. Interpersonal skills seem to me one of the most often overlooked aspects of the journalists’ skillset - viz Platon below.
Unfortunately we don’t all have your debonair charm David
Only 100 hits on youtube! I dont see how you can describe this as a successful example of anything
LOL - David is a schmoozer that’s for sure - but one hell of a mentor to those like myself.
Regarding the need for interpersonal skills - a good understanding of human behavior is a crucial skill set the detractors seem to have let go by the wayside.
It has been my personal experience that mainstream corporate news shooters/hair and teeth reporters are more concerned about themselves than the person they’re speaking with - it’s no wonder TV news people are looked upon in the same league as used car salesman. They also seem to have become quite rabid in pursuing personal attacks on public fora - which leads me to believe they’ve all gone off the deep end…
David’s not a schmoozer - a schmoozer is someone with an ulterior motive. David is a luvvie - not sure there is a direct counterpart in American English - basically you have to have been to Public(i.e private) school and worked for the BBC, or better yet - in the west-end theater. Also must have a great deal of enthusiasm for your craft and talent, and an intimacy with members of the Royal Family - a sort of intellectual James Bond.
BTW - Sebastian Faulks new Bond book is brilliant. Never liked Ian Fleming much.
